Mentorship & Lab Culture

My commitment as a mentor is to guide and empower you to reach your professional goals. I strive to foster open communication, provide clear expectations, and support your integral development.

My approach draws from two distinct academic cultures: I aim to balance the German tradition of fostering high independence with the Mexican style of close, personal monitoring. This allows you to develop self-reliance while knowing you have a supportive ally by your side to help you navigate academic challenges.

We foster an environment where collaboration is prioritized over competition, understanding that our collective success depends on mutual support. In our group, mistakes are viewed as opportunities for learning, not for humiliation.

I also recognize the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Success in our lab is measured by research progress, not by the number of hours spent in the lab. I expect you to take ownership of your project and to cultivate critical thinking, questioning ideas based on evidence. My ultimate goal is for you to evolve into an independent colleague capable of leading your own research with integrity.

We are firmly committed against bullying, sexual harassment, gender bias, and discrimination in science. We take all complaints seriously and have a zero-tolerance policy, we will follow through all institutional and legal channels if required

Opportunities for Students

Graduate Students (MSc & PhD)

We participate in the Graduate Program in Life Sciences at CICESE. We are seeking enthusiastic and responsible students with a grade average of 8.4 or higher and a good command of English (or willingness to improve it).

If you are interested, please send an email including a statement of your research interests (in English or Spanish). Be sure to review the official admission requirements below.

Undergraduate Students, Internships & Social Service

Undergraduate Theses (Tesis de Licenciatura)

We offer challenging research projects for students with a strong commitment to finish and defend their undergraduate thesis. We will work closely with you in the lab, training your manual and analytical skills in molecular microbiology. Our goal is to prepare you to successfully start a Master's program—with us or elsewhere—after obtaining your degree.

Internships & Short Stays

We also welcome students who wish to join our lab for Social Service (Servicio Social), Professional Internships (Prácticas Profesionales), or Summer Stays. These positions are an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in active research lines. We look for responsible students ready to learn and contribute to the lab's goals.
